Call for Fair Employment Standards

Stakeholders have been raising their voices about the need to protect workers as AI technology keeps changing how industries work.

During a recent conference held by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) called ‘Advancing Social Justice in the Era of the Knowledge Economy and Artificial Intelligence,’ these voices were very clear. They said it’s important that automation doesn’t replace human jobs to create a fair digital economy.

Ensuring Decent Work Standards

The stakeholders emphasized:

  • Fair wages
  • Job security
  • Ethical working conditions

According to them, there needs to be a strong relationship between employers and workers to make sure AI-driven jobs meet these standards.

AI and Job Automation

McKinsey reports that Gen-AI and other technologies could automate tasks that currently take up 60 to 70 percent of employees’ time. This brings up a big question: How will the remaining work be distributed?

ILO’s Strategies for Digital Transition

The ILO Director-General, Gilbert Houngbo, pointed out three key ways to handle the digital shift:

  • Identify which skills will be in demand
  • Promote lifelong learning for adults
  • Enhance social dialogue to protect workers

Houngbo stressed the need for AI jobs to meet decent work standards, where both workers and employers participate in designing and implementing AI.

IT Expert’s Insight

Speaking with the news conference, IT expert Mr. Samuel Konwea noted that AI has the potential to change Nigeria’s economy by driving innovation and increasing productivity. However, he warned that there need to be robust policies in place to make sure everyone has access to these benefits and to avoid worsening current social and economic inequalities.

Konwea emphasized that Nigeria should invest in digital infrastructure and skill development, especially in underserved communities. He also insisted on a clear regulatory framework to protect data privacy, cybersecurity, and ethical AI use.

Conclusion

Konwea summed up by stating that proper management of AI can lead to economic growth and a more inclusive digital economy. Ethical AI governance should align with Nigeria’s socioeconomic goals and reflect the needs of its diverse population.
